My nephew really wants to try snowboarding. He's going to take a lesson before he goes out there, but I was hoping to find some tips that might not get addressed in the quick lesson. What are some of the important basics to know?

Better to take the lesson first so you don't get conflicting information. If some random on the internet says one thing but his instructor says another, it's likely to cause confusion. You may even get some bad advice, which means spending lesson time unlearning bad habits.

His instructor will be well trained and capable of using the resort's beginner terrain to maximize your nephew's retention of the basics.

If after the lesson if he is having trouble with something, or you would like more information on some of the things his instructor touches on, I'd be glad to help.

But for now, just make sure he listens to his instructor.

I agree with louG, an instructor will be trained in making sure your son learns correctly without hurting himself. Makes sure he has enough lessons before going on the slopes and he will be fine.

Kindly take note of the few tips before snowboarding. My 2 cents:)

Check the weather before starting out. Make sure that the conditions are favourable for the day or plan to be back down to the bottom of the slopes prior to the expected beginning of bad weather.

Wear the proper clothing. As there is a lot of movement needed to snowboard, it is important to wear loose fitting clothes.

Make sure the board you are using is the correct size and that it is in good condition.

Know your limits. Don't try to snowboard in areas that are too difficult for your level of experiences.

Learn how to fall. Make sure your fingers are curled under and your arms are bent when falling.

Wear safety equipment such as helmets, elbow and kneepads, and protective gear for those falls that may lead to tailbone injury.

Finally Make sure all gear is in good condition and fits correctly.

Yah because knee pads help tailbone injuries...?

Being an instructor I just have to say relax, keep your knees bent, dont look at the snow or thats where youll go (look where you want to go not at your feet), have fun, dress properly and always better to bring extra clothes in case the weather report was wrong, only one pair of socks not two (see it all the time) and last...Listen to the instructor to many kids think their hot shit and dont listen and dont learn.

Have fun!

Always start from home, Snowboarding for beginners should begin before getting on the mountain. Beginning riders should learn and practice the basic positions and movements indoors, at home, or on the flat.

This can really save him from serious injuries.

thats great if they have any idea of what to do. It can also teach bad habits which can also hurt them and people like me have to fix those problems...

No, no, no, no, no, no, no. First, if you are beginner you don't know about positions and movements; you can read about them, look at them, but you won't be able to tell what's right or wrong because, well, you don't know.

Second, there's only one movement you can practice indoors, a carpet block, which is completely useless in almost all regards; there is absolutely no way to learn how to control your snowboard standing still on carpet.

The only thing you could do standing still is practice your stance. This is covered in the first minute of a beginner lesson, so bottom line: Just take a lesson.

right, but OP said his nephew wants to learn so i thought he might help him at home first. I supposed OP is good at snowboarding.

Ah! Never suppose. For instance I supposed you are just on this forum looking for clicks to your copy-pasted gear reviews and affiliate links.
